What to do first when your home is unliveable

  1. 1

    Make sure everyone is safe

If there is immediate danger — fire, gas, structural collapse, live electrical — call 000 first. Only re-enter when it is safe.

  2. 2

Prevent further damage if you safely can

Turn off water or power at the mains if that stops the damage getting worse. Don't put yourself at risk.

  3. 3

Take photos and video before you clean up

Document every affected room and item. Your insurer will want evidence, and it makes the claim faster.

  4. 4

Call your insurer to lodge the claim

Use the claims number on your policy (or the list below). Ask specifically about temporary accommodation — it's part of most home policies.

  5. 5

    Keep every receipt

Emergency accommodation, meals and essential purchases may be reimbursable. Keep records from day one.

Temporary accommodation questions

Does home insurance cover temporary accommodation?

Most home building policies include temporary accommodation (also called "loss of rent" or "alternative accommodation") when your home is unliveable due to an insured event. Cover is usually a percentage of the sum insured or a set period — check your PDS or ask your insurer when you lodge the claim.

How quickly can we get into temporary accommodation?

Once your insurer approves temporary accommodation, we can often place a family in a furnished whole home within 24 hours. Call us early — we can start lining up a home while your claim is being assessed.

Can I choose a house instead of a hotel or serviced apartment?

Often, yes. Your policy covers accommodation appropriate to your household. If a hotel or serviced apartment can't fit your family or won't take your pet, a whole home can be a reasonable request — and we can talk to your insurer or their booking agent directly.
